MOOG MODULARIt was 1970. I was 13 years old listening to the radio back in Christchurch New Zealand. They played a new acoustic track by Emerson Lake and Palmer. I was learning piano at the time and had just passed my grade 4 theory and practical so had very eager ears.

I suddenly heard a sound I’d never heard before, a drone in D getting louder and louder that then turned into one of the wildest rides I could imagine. I was hooked.

I now feel a Lucky Man to be a part of the name that inspired me way back as a young kid, so thank you MOOG ~ Grant Ettrick

… and just in case you don’t get the reference, the track mentioned is Lucky Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer. It is an acoustic folky song until the last chorus where Keith Emerson triggered three slightly detuned square waves from the analogue oscillators on his newly acquired 1969 MOOG Modular.

You can hear it in the following video which should start at the last chorus for you.. listen for that D drone and where Keith takes it adding portamento and sweeping octaves with those wonderful resonant but wide open filters.

MOOG have recreated the original synth. Check out the Emerson Moog Modular System
